Vanessa following her COVID-19 infection

Not only is this a devastating virus that has touched all of society in one way or another, but if you have been unlucky enough to have caught the infection we are now seeing the awful long term effects of the disease. One of the 'long COVID' side effects is presenting in women by causing hair loss. Specifically, it seems a Telogen Efflivium phase in which the hair follicles seem to go into the Telogen or resting phase, causing excessive diffuse shedding and thinning of the hair.

This in itself is a very very distressing, causing anxiety and worry. These episodes of excess hair shedding seem to be the body’s autoimmune response to the COVID-19 infection.

If you are experiencing excess prolonged shedding of your hair following a COVID-19 infection, firstly contact you GP and dermatologist for a consultation. In addition, you can contact Vanessa at Glamorous Butterfly to chat about your hair loss and set up a video consultation so she can help you further.
